Archival Plan

This page describes how I am going about archiving family photos and how Gallery will allow everyone to help catalog photos.

Strategy/Goals

  • The archive is for meaningful photos. E.g., 10 blurry photos of a bush nobody remembers should probably be omitted.
  • The archive is searchable and accessible. If you have the digital copy, then you can find the physical copy in under 5 minutes and vice verse. Cataloging, at a minimum, keeps track of an images file name, physical location, and digital location.
  • The archive can be updated, upgraded, and easily managed for the future.

Naming

Each picture is scanned in with a unique name. The naming convention is as follows: bunch#-photo#. E.g., 012-032.tiff would be picture 32 of bunch 12. A bunch, for this purpose is the number for identifying a group of physical photos that are stored together in a "bunch". The plan is to scan one bunch at a time as well.

Scanning

Scans are being made in the lossless .TIFF format for the best possible data capture. A scans DPI will never be below 300 dpi but will likely be set to 600.

Storing

For now, each image (.tiff) is being saved on two (2) separate hard drives. Additionally, a high resolution .jpg is being kept on the server for this website.
